Gas Fee Calculator
Gas Fee Calculator: Find Your Crypto Transaction Cost Before You Send
A gas fee calculator multiplies the gas units your transaction uses by the gas price in gwei, then converts that number into Ether (ETH) and US dollars (USD). A plain ETH transfer always uses 21,000 gas. At the 1.77 gwei average Etherscan recorded on October 1, 2026, with ETH trading near $2,697.51, that transfer cost roughly a dime.

How to Use the Gas Fee Calculator
To use the gas fee calculator, pick a network and transaction type, then set the gas price or speed tier. No wallet yet? Learn how to create a crypto wallet first, since every network fee is paid from one.
- Select the network. Ethereum mainnet, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon, and BNB Chain each price gas on their own terms.
- Choose the transaction type. Presets fill in gas units automatically, for example 65,000 for a USDC transfer.
- Set the speed. Standard, fast, and rapid tiers attach progressively larger tips.
- Read the result. Your estimate appears in gwei and ETH, with the dollar figure beside it.
Need something the presets don’t cover, such as a multi-step DeFi deposit? Copy the gas limit from your wallet’s confirmation screen into the custom field. The math stays identical. Most fees are paid from a hot wallet; see hot wallet vs cold wallet for when to use each.
How the Gas Fee Calculator Works
The gas fee calculator works by applying one formula: Fee (ETH) = gas units × (base fee + priority fee) ÷ 1,000,000,000. Dividing by one billion turns gwei into ETH, because 1 gwei equals 0.000000001 ETH. Multiply that result by the live ETH price and you’ve got the cost in dollars.
Here’s the math for a standard transfer, using Etherscan’s October 1, 2026 snapshot: a 1.679 gwei base fee, a fast-tier average of 1.77 gwei, and ETH at $2,697.51:
- Gas units: 21,000
- Gas price: 1.679 gwei base + 0.091 gwei priority = 1.77 gwei
- Fee in gwei: 21,000 × 1.77 = 37,170 gwei
- Fee in ETH: 0.00003717 ETH
- Fee in USD: 0.00003717 × $2,697.51 = $0.10
Base Fee and Priority Fee
The base fee is the protocol-set minimum price per gas unit, and the priority fee is an optional tip paid to validators. Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP)-1559, active since August 2021, adjusts the base fee from block to block and burns it, so nobody collects it. Tips buy speed. On October 1, Etherscan’s rapid tier carried a 0.887 gwei tip for confirmation in about 30 seconds, while the standard tier added no tip and took roughly 2 minutes.
Gas Limit vs. Gas Used
You pay for gas used, not for the gas limit. The limit is a ceiling your wallet sets as protection. Set it too low, though, and the transaction runs dry halfway through, reverts, and still charges you for every unit it consumed. Wallets also display a max fee, and the effective price you pay is the lower of your max fee or the base fee plus tip.
How Many Gas Units Do Common Transactions Use?
Common Ethereum transactions use between 21,000 and roughly 1,200,000 gas units. Plain transfers sit at the bottom of that range, and contract deployments at the top. The gas figures come from ethereum.org’s 2026 developer reference and, for NFT mints, Chaingate’s tracker presets. The live table above prices each one at whatever gas price you enter.
ERC-20 (Ethereum Request for Comments 20) is the token standard behind stablecoins such as USDC. Exact gas depends on the contract’s code. A decentralized exchange (DEX) swap routed through 3 liquidity pools uses noticeably more than a single-pool trade.
What Do Ethereum Gas Fees Cost Right Now?
A basic Ethereum transfer costs about $0.10, based on Etherscan data from October 1, 2026. Etherscan priced a standard-speed swap at $1.61 that day, which is higher than the table’s $0.86 because its estimate assumes a heavier multi-pool route. Ethereum ranks second in our top 10 cryptocurrencies by market cap.
Prices swing hard during market stress. On February 5, 2026, with ETH down nearly 12% to $1,873.50, average gas jumped to 18.006 gwei and a simple transfer cost $0.71. That’s seven times the October figure for the identical 21,000-gas action.
How Are Layer 2 Fees Calculated?
Layer 2 (L2) fees combine an execution fee on the L2 itself with a data fee for posting transaction batches back to Ethereum. EIP-4844, shipped in the March 2024 Dencun upgrade, gave rollups a cheaper data lane called blobs and pushed that second component down sharply. Volume followed: rollups now handle about 95 percent of Ethereum’s transactions.
Watch for one common error. Some tools apply mainnet’s gas math to Arbitrum or Base and skip the data fee entirely, so the number they show is wrong. This calculator lists both parts separately when you choose Layer 2.
How Do Bitcoin and Solana Fees Differ From Ethereum Gas?
Bitcoin charges by transaction size in satoshis per virtual byte (sat/vB), while Solana charges a flat fee per signature plus an optional priority fee. Neither network uses gas.
A typical Bitcoin SegWit payment with 1 input and 2 outputs weighs about 141 vB. At 5 sat/vB, the fee comes to 705 satoshis (0.00000705 BTC). Wallets holding dozens of small deposits pay more, because each extra input adds bytes. Solana’s base charge is 5,000 lamports (0.000005 SOL) per signature, and congestion only raises the optional priority portion.
What Raises or Lowers Your Gas Fee?
4 factors set your final gas fee: network demand, transaction complexity, the tip you attach, and the ETH price.
- Network demand: Full blocks raise the base fee by up to 12.5% per block under EIP-1559.
- Transaction complexity: More contract calls mean more gas units, for example 180,000 for a swap against 21,000 for a transfer.
- Priority tip: Larger tips buy faster inclusion but add cost on top of the base fee.
- ETH price: Identical gwei produces a different dollar cost when ETH moves.
How to Pay Lower Gas Fees
To pay lower gas fees, move routine activity to an L2 and send when the base fee is low.
- Use Base or Arbitrum for everyday swaps and stablecoin transfers.
- Check a live gas tracker before confirming anything large.
- Skip the rapid tier unless timing matters. On October 1, standard speed cost $0.095 per transfer against $0.145 for rapid.
- Set a realistic gas limit, since a failed transaction burns fees with nothing to show for it.
How Are Gas Fees Treated for US Taxes?
Gas fees are not a standalone deduction for personal investors; the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) builds them into cost basis or sale proceeds instead. IRS Form 8949 instructions define a digital asset’s basis as its acquisition cost plus transaction fees and commissions. Our crypto profit calculator adds fees to your cost basis for you.
| Activity | Gas Fee Treatment |
|---|---|
| Buying crypto with dollars | Added to the cost basis of the asset you buy |
| Selling crypto for dollars | Subtracted from your proceeds |
| Swapping one token for another | Allocated to the token you give up, not added to the new token’s basis |
| Failed personal transaction | Generally treated as nondeductible |
The swap rule comes from the 2024 final regulations, which assign all transaction costs on a crypto-to-crypto exchange to the asset disposed of, and the failed-transaction row reflects common preparer practice. Reporting is tightening too: brokers must report cost basis on Form 1099-DA for sales on or after January 1, 2026. This section is general information, so talk to a CPA about your own return.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a gas fee calculator accurate?
Yes, for the inputs it receives. The base fee can shift between your estimate and block inclusion, and contract gas varies by route, so expect small differences on busy days.
Do failed transactions still cost gas?
Yes. Validators execute the transaction until it reverts or runs dry, and every unit consumed up to that point gets charged, even though no tokens move.
Why is my wallet’s fee higher than the calculator’s?
Wallets display a max fee, a ceiling set above today’s base fee to absorb sudden spikes. Your actual charge equals base plus tip on gas used.
Can I pay Ethereum gas fees in USDC?
No, not natively. Mainnet accepts only ETH for gas, though certain smart wallets use paymasters that cover the fee and bill you in USDC afterward.
When is the cheapest time to send ETH?
During low-demand hours, when the base fee drops. Quiet windows shift week to week, so check a live tracker right before sending.
