Crypto Profit Calculator
Crypto Profit Calculator: See Your Real Gain After Fees and Tax
A crypto profit calculator shows your net profit or loss by subtracting your total cost (buy amount plus entry fees) from your sale proceeds (sell value minus exit fees), then converts that figure into a return on investment (ROI) percentage. Enter 4 numbers: amount invested, buy price, sell price and fee rate. You’ll get your profit in dollars or pounds, the ROI, the exact coin quantity bought and the sell price you need just to break even.
Fees took 0 off the move.
Estimates for planning only. Federal tax only for the US, no state tax or 3.8% NIIT. UK figures use 2026/27 rates and assume the whole gain falls in the band you pick.
UK investors are taxed on a pooled average cost (Section 104 pool) after same-day and 30-day matching. US investors are taxed lot by lot, so which coins you sell first changes the gain.
Mined coins count as income at market value on the day you receive them in both the US and UK. That value becomes your cost basis when you sell. Estimate what your rig earns with our crypto mining calculator.
How to Use the Crypto Profit Calculator
To use the crypto profit calculator, enter 4 inputs (amount invested, buy price, sell price and fee rate), then read your net profit, ROI and break-even price in the settlement slip. Results refresh as you type, so the same tool works as a crypto ROI calculator and a profit tracker. Any crypto calculator can multiply coins by price, and a basic crypto coin calculator will tell you that 0.5 BTC is worth a certain number of dollars, but neither shows what the position actually earned once costs come out.
| Field | What to enter | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Coin | The asset traded, such as Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH) or Solana (SOL) | BTC |
| Currency | US dollars (USD) or British pounds (GBP) | USD |
| Amount invested | Cash spent, entry fee included | $1,000 |
| Buy price | Price per coin when you bought | $60,000 |
| Sell price | Price per coin at exit, or your target | $75,000 |
| Entry and exit fee | Percentage per side | 0.5% |
| Holding period | Months held | 14 months |
Enter today’s market price as the sell price for a position you still hold. You’ll then see unrealized profit, which neither the IRS nor HMRC taxes until you sell or swap the coins. Before you open the next trade, set its size with our position size calculator.
How to Calculate Crypto Profit
To calculate crypto profit, subtract your total cost from your net sale proceeds. Total cost is the cash you put in, entry fee included. Net proceeds are the sale value once the exit fee comes off. Here’s the sequence the calculator runs:
Gross sale value = Coins bought × Sell price
Net proceeds = Gross sale value − Exit fee
Profit = Net proceeds − Amount invested
ROI = Profit ÷ Amount invested × 100
Tax authorities in both markets follow the same logic. Buying fees get added to your cost basis and selling fees come off your proceeds, so skipping them means reporting a bigger gain than you made.
Worked Example: $1,000 of Bitcoin
| Step | Value |
|---|---|
| Amount invested | $1,000.00 |
| Entry fee (0.5%) | $5.00 |
| Coins bought at $60,000 | 0.016583 BTC (1,658,333 satoshis) |
| Gross sale value at $75,000 | $1,243.75 |
| Exit fee (0.5%) | $6.22 |
| Net proceeds | $1,237.53 |
| Profit | $237.53 |
| ROI | 23.75% |
Bitcoin rose 25%. Your return didn’t. Fees on the two sides took $11.22, trimming 1.25 percentage points off the headline move.
Which Fees Reduce Crypto Profit?
4 fee types reduce crypto profit: trading fees, the bid-ask spread, network fees and withdrawal or conversion fees. Only the first one shows up on most exchange fee pages. Estimate network fees before you send with our gas fee calculator.
- Trading fees: a percentage charged per order, usually lower for maker (limit) orders than for taker (market) orders.
- Spread markup: the hidden margin on “instant buy” screens, where a 1% markup on a £500 purchase costs £5 that never appears as a line item.
- Network fees: gas paid to move coins on-chain, such as an Ethereum transfer that costs a few dollars when the network is congested.
- Withdrawal and conversion fees: charges for moving coins off an exchange or switching currencies, such as turning GBP into the USD stablecoin USDC.
Use a blended rate if your exchange charges different maker and taker fees. On large orders in thin markets, slippage pushes your real fill below the quoted price, so test a sell price a little under the one on screen. Each crypto trading platform publishes its maker and taker rates, and our ranking compares them.
What Is the Break-Even Sell Price?
Your break-even sell price equals the buy price divided by (1 − entry fee rate) × (1 − exit fee rate). Selling below that level locks in a loss even when the chart shows green. With 0.5% fees each way on a $60,000 entry, break-even lands at $60,604.53, which means Bitcoin has to climb about 1.01% before the trade earns a cent.
Losses compound against you. A coin that drops 50% needs a 100% rally just to recover, and an 80% drawdown, common among altcoins in the 2022 bear market, demands a 400% gain.
How to Find Your Average Cost Across Multiple Buys
To find your average cost, divide the total cash you spent by the total number of coins you bought. Dollar-cost averaging (DCA) spreads purchases over weeks or months, so no single buy price reflects the whole position.
| Buy | Amount | Price per BTC | BTC bought |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $1,000 | $50,000 | 0.020 |
| 2 | $1,000 | $40,000 | 0.025 |
| 3 | $1,000 | $62,500 | 0.016 |
| Total | $3,000 | $49,180 average | 0.061 |
The Multiple buys tab does this sum for any number of lots. UK investors are taxed on a pooled average much like this one. US investors aren’t, because the IRS taxes individual lots, and selling the $62,500 coins first produces a smaller gain if your records identify those units at the time of sale.
Why ROI and Annualized Return Tell Different Stories
ROI measures your total gain, while annualized return, or compound annual growth rate (CAGR), measures your gain per year. For trades held over different periods, CAGR is the fairer yardstick.
A 50% gain over 3 years sounds stronger than 20% in 6 months. It isn’t. The first works out to 14.47% a year, while the second annualizes to 44%, assuming you could repeat it. Fill in the holding period and the crypto ROI calculator shows both figures side by side.
How Is Crypto Profit Taxed in the US and UK?
Both countries tax crypto profit as a capital gain when you sell or swap coins, but the rates and allowances differ. Trading one coin for another is a disposal, even when no dollars or pounds reach your bank.
| Rule | United States (IRS) | United Kingdom (HMRC) |
|---|---|---|
| Tax-free amount | No allowance; a 0% long-term rate applies at lower incomes | £3,000 annual exempt amount (2026/27) |
| Rates | 10% to 37% if held 1 year or less; 0%, 15% or 20% if held longer | 18% within the basic rate band; 24% above it |
| Extra charge | 3.8% Net Investment Income Tax (NIIT) for high earners | None |
| Cost method | FIFO by default, or specific identification | Same-day rule, then 30-day rule, then Section 104 pool |
| Where to report | Form 8949 and Schedule D | Self Assessment, due 31 January |
US: IRS Capital Gains and Form 1099-DA
Brokers now send Form 1099-DA to you and the IRS. For 2025 sales, the form showed gross proceeds only. Forms covering 2026 sales arrive in early 2027 and add cost basis, though only for covered coins bought on or after January 1, 2026 and held in the same account. Coins transferred in from another wallet still rely on your own records, and a blank basis box makes the whole sale look like profit.
UK: HMRC Capital Gains Tax and Pooling Rules
Take a basic-rate taxpayer with a £5,000 crypto gain in 2026/27 that fits inside the unused basic rate band. After the £3,000 allowance, £2,000 is taxable at 18%, giving a £360 bill; a higher-rate taxpayer pays £480 on the same gain. Since 1 January 2026, UK exchanges have reported customer transactions to HMRC under the OECD Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF).
How Does a Mining Calculator Measure Mining Profitability?
A mining calculator measures mining profitability by subtracting electricity costs and pool fees from the value of the coins your hardware earns each day. The daily formula is (coins mined × coin price) − (power draw in kW × 24 hours × electricity rate) − pool fee.
A GPU mining calculator needs 6 inputs: hashrate in megahashes per second (MH/s), power draw in watts, electricity price, pool fee, coin price and network difficulty. Power usually decides the answer. One 200-watt graphics card running for 24 hours draws 4.8 kilowatt-hours (kWh), costing $0.82 a day at $0.17/kWh or £1.20 a day at 25p/kWh.
Ethereum moved to proof of stake in September 2022, which ended GPU mining of ETH. Home rigs now target coins such as Ravencoin (RVN) and Ergo (ERG). In both the US and UK, mined coins count as income at their market value on the day you receive them, and that value becomes your cost basis when you later run the sale through this crypto profit calculator.
Crypto Profit Calculator FAQs
Is a crypto profit calculator accurate?
Yes. The math is exact for whatever you type in. Results drift only when inputs are guessed, so copy fee rates and fill prices straight from your exchange’s order history.
Do I pay tax on crypto profit I haven’t sold?
No. Neither the IRS nor HMRC taxes unrealized gains. A charge arises once you sell coins or swap them for another asset, though staking and mining rewards count as income on receipt.
How do I calculate crypto profit without a calculator?
Multiply the coins you hold by the sell price and deduct exit fees. Take away everything you paid, entry fees included. Divide that figure by total cost and multiply by 100 for ROI.
Can crypto losses lower my tax bill?
Yes. Losses offset gains in both countries. US filers can deduct up to $3,000 of net capital losses against ordinary income each year, and UK investors must report losses to HMRC within 4 years.
Is GPU mining still profitable?
Yes, where electricity is cheap. Power cost decides the result, so enter your hashrate, wattage and local tariff per kWh into a GPU mining calculator before buying any hardware.
This calculator gives estimates for planning and is not financial or tax advice. Confirm large or complex gains with a CPA in the US or a chartered tax adviser in the UK.
